SPF health and biosecurity

SPF is a process, not just a test.

Start with a defined health status. Review the pathogen scope, testing method, production context and dates before interpreting a broodstock health claim.

What to review in the health information.

01

SPF is a defined health status

Specific pathogen free does not mean universally disease free. Review the specified pathogens, testing method, facility or population scope and relevant dates.

02

Biosecurity is an operating practice

Ask how entry controls, surveillance, water management and separation protect the production environment. Review the operating practices as well as the test documents.

03

Health status is not a resistance claim

SPF status, disease tolerance and resistance describe different things. An SPF statement does not establish a tolerance or resistance claim.
